All students will need to bring a financial calculator to class. The best ones are manufactured by Hewlett Packard because they are the easiest to use. We recommend only the HP 10 B II. You can buy them at Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Depot, and Amazon.com. Cost is approximately $40. This is the same calculator you will use for the CFP(r) exam. The exam does not allow you to use calculators that are "programmable."
If you have another style of financial calculator, be sure and bring the instruction booklet to class. You will need to be familiar with keystrokes for present and future values as well as cash flow functions. Other styles include HP 12 C and Texas Instruments.
Below you will find Topic 59 and two worksheets. This is a Keir Handout that discusses in detail the calculations made to establish how much the "nest egg" needs to be on the first day of retirement, how much in savings is required to arrive at the nest egg and the effects of inflation on both. We will be working through this example in class. Please print off all three files and have them in your notebook.
